Hakuba

Alpine giants of the Japanese Alps

Village & Travel

The village & getting to Hakuba

Happo & Echoland

The valley's social heart is around Happo and the Echoland strip — a dense run of bars, izakaya, ramen shops, bakeries and international restaurants that has become a proper little nightlife district. Hakuba's dining scene has matured fast and now rivals Niseko's for variety.

Accommodation ranges from traditional pensions and family-run lodges to modern apartments and a handful of luxury hotels. Free and paid shuttles link the villages to the resorts.

Beyond the slopes

Hakuba pairs beautifully with Nagano's culture. The wild snow monkeys of Jigokudani — macaques bathing in a steaming hot spring — are a day trip away, as are the sake breweries and temples of the Nagano region. Back in the valley, soak in a local onsen with a view of the Alps.

  • Snow monkey park — an iconic half-day trip
  • Village & sake brewery tours in the surrounding valleys
  • Snowshoe treks through silent birch forest for non-skiers

Getting there

Hakuba is the easiest big-mountain resort to reach from Tokyo. Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano (about 1.5 hours), then a bus or transfer into the valley (about an hour). Door-to-door it's roughly 4.5–5 hours from the Tokyo airports — you can land and be on snow the same day.
